Thank you Thank you Thank you

Nov. 18, 2010

Beginning in earnest in July, the volunteers who have created Charlotte's necklace of Friendship Gardens have been delivering their harvest to Friendship Trays.

Deliveries from Sedgefield Middle and Sterling Elementary Schools today pushed the total produce collected and recorded at Friendship Trays to just over the 1,000 pound mark. So let me take this occasion to say thank you...

To the scores of volunteers who have built, planted, tended and weeded beds through the spring, summer and fall growing seasons.

– To the landowners and organizations who have allowed the Friendship Gardens initiative to convert lawns or idle spots of land into productive gardens.

– To the Women's Impact Fund, whose grant to Slow Food Charlotte will continue for some time to underwrite some of the expenses of this project.

– To the committed folks of Slow Food Charlotte, my colleagues at Friendship Trays and countless others who have helped will this initiative to success.

All the gardens are named here and you can tour each of the gardens from that page. The harvest totals are here. The picture diary starts here.

We will continue to receive harvests from the gardens this fall, and will look foward to the first produce of spring in March or April.

And Friendship Trays recipients will continue to benefit from access to fresh, nutritious, local produce in their meals.

And what about the children and adults who have dug their hands into the rich earth and brought forth food? They too have benefitted from this initiative. For there is good health to be found for all in knowing where our food came from, in knowing how it grows, and being good stewards of the land.

Again, thank you for making the first 1,000 pounds possible!

Lucy Bush Carter, Executive Director
